About Fountain Hill Wildlife Management Area

Fountain Hill Wildlife Management Area (WMA) encompasses approximately 18,000 acres located in Ashley County, Arkansas, bordering the Arkansas River. Characterized by bottomland hardwood forests, cypress-tupelo swamps, and riparian habitats, the area provides critical habitat for a variety of wildlife species including white-tailed deer, wild turkey, waterfowl, and numerous migratory birds. The WMA plays a vital role in conserving the ecological integrity of the Arkansas River floodplain, contributing to water quality, flood control, and habitat diversity. Established in 1969, Fountain Hill WMA is managed by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, offering year-round opportunities for outdoor recreation such as hunting, fishing, birdwatching, and hiking. The presence of wetlands and waterways provides excellent fishing and waterfowl hunting, while the upland forests are popular for deer and turkey hunting. Several small trails and boat access points traverse the area, enabling visitors to explore its natural beauty. The region has a rich cultural history tied to river commerce and early settlement in the Arkansas River Valley. Its protected status safeguards vital habitats and supports conservation education. Visitors appreciate the peaceful, wilderness-like atmosphere and chance to observe abundant wildlife in a less developed setting. Proximity to the town of Fountain Hill and other small communities offers convenient access for day trips or extended outdoor adventures. Fountain Hill WMA remains a significant site for both natural resource protection and public outdoor enjoyment within Arkansas.
